6 MESSAGES Message from the Former  Executive Director of MGCC I am still carrying lots of fond memories of the ten years when Malaysia was my second home and  MGCC a task most worthwhile working for   This was not always an easy task  There were many obstacles to be overcome and many challenges  to be mastered   The Asian Financial Crisis in 1997 put Malaysia s economy under terrible stress  It was a courageous  fight by the government to defend the financial system against attacks by speculators and to  uphold the country s standing as one of the most preferred investment locations in Southeast Asia   We had the attack of the Nipah virus in 1999  which scared visitors away and there was the horrible  Tsunami in 2004  MGCC is the pivotal point in Malaysian German business relations  The Chamber s departments  process commercial inquiries from customers in Malaysia  Germany and beyond for Singapore   sometimes from Hong Kong or India and many other countries  A substantial volume of services are  rendered to either visitors or exhibitors in international trade fairs and exhibitions in Germany  The  ever increasing number of incoming business delegations from Germany reflect a growing interest  of German companies in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific Region   The Chamber is honoured to contribute to the Dialogue Sessions offered by the Malaysian  Government and by a number of Federal States  In this context  member companies have the  opportunity to present suggestions and even grievances  In the spirit of Malaysia Inc   representing  a close and friendly cooperation between the public and the private sector  these issues are then  followed up on and solutions are found  Enjoying the trust and reliance of both the German and the Malaysian governments  MGCC is in a  position to act as an appreciated advisor  contributor and sometimes even mediator for nation  building and bilateral cooperation  This would not have been possible without a truly committed  Board of Directors  a vivid membership and a dedicated staff  Being home to three races and three or even four major world religions  Malaysia is special  Whether  it is the vibrant city of Kuala Lumpur or the serenity of Terengganu or East Malaysia  the warm  welcome received at open houses or the experience of mouthwatering food specialties  Malaysia is  a unique gemstone of Asia  MGCC turns 25  This milestone calls for celebration  Throughout these 25 years  MGCC has become  the top promoter of Malaysian German economic cooperation and the very best service provider  for companies seeking to do successful projects in both Malaysia and Germany  Congratulations to MGCC and all the best for the next 25 years to come  Dr  Rainer Herret  J S M   Dr  Rainer Herret was the Executive Director of MGCC from 1998 to 2008
