Similar to the UAE Qatar is working on infrastructural projects within the framework of its Qatar National Vision 2030 Ever since Doha received the go ahead for the FIFA World Cup 2022 the construction of the transportation network has become a matter of high priority Deutsche Bahn International was assigned with the development of a concept to build up a nationwide railway system as early as 2009 The latter was also included in the application for the World Championship 2022 The public corporation Qatar rail was founded in 2011 in order to set up the institutional framework for the development of the railway network and it is now in charge of the design construction commissioning and the running of the whole railway system The entire project covers a comprehensive railroad freight transportation system as well as passenger services a large metro network trams and subways for chosen urban districts in Doha The first construction phase will be completed by 2010 the second one by 2026 A long distance connection is planned from the Bahrain Qatar Causeway via the capital Doha until the border to Saudi Arabia The deadline to tender for consultancy services for long distance freight tracks and high speed railway lines for passenger traffic lapsed at the end of March 2013 Moreover the construction of the Qatar metro is progressing and encompasses the Red Gold Green and Blue lines The total length of the railroad is set at 300 km of which 100 km will be tunnels The first segment of the Red line which makes up Phase 1 spans 129 railway kilometres The longest track section of the first phase connects the city districts West Bay Lusail and Al Wakra and makes up 52 km Furthermore a tramway is planned in Lusail and West Bay On the whole the construction of three interchange stations 10 km of tunnels and 36 stations are planned Currently Lusail is the biggest construction area and will be transformed into a new city district for about 220 000 inhabitants In April 2012 the contract for the building inspection and control was awarded to the German company Dorsch Consult A so called People Mover in the city district of West Bay is expected to decongest the traffic situation on a street of 11 km While Saudi Arabia Qatar and the UAE are progressing with their undertakings developments in Kuwait and Oman are still in their early stages The government of Kuwait has postponed the plans for a metro and railway route However the political will to participate in the GCC railway network has been reaffirmed The developments in the region offer new market potential for German enterprises both as consortium partners suppliers or subcontractors In September a Bavarian Delegation travelled to the UAE Qatar and Oman to present their newest technology Furthermore in December 2014 a delegation under the auspices of the German Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy visited the UAE and Qatar and a symposium on German transport technology was organized in Abu Dhabi Within the framework of the project AHK has conducted a market study on the UAE transport sector for German companies n FOCUSFOCUS Dr Dalia Abu Samra Rohte Deputy CEO and Director Abu Dhabi Office Regional Coordinator Business Development at German Emirati Joint Council for Industry and Commerce AHK
