Abu Dhabi had temporarily stopped its 2008 Midfield Terminal project The USD 3 billion project finally came to tender in 2011 and is now being built by a consortium consisting of the TAV the Greek Consolidated Contractors Company and the local Arabtec Construction The new terminal is planned with 65 gates that can also be used by the Mega Liner A380 The new terminal is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually The opening is set for 2017 This project is part of the expansion strategy of Etihad Airways the national airline of the Emirate The Abu Dhabi International Airport AUH recorded in 2012 an increase in passenger traffic by 19 to 14 7 million In 2013 an increase from 12 to 16 5 million is reported The capacity of the existing three terminals however is designed to a maximum of 12 5 million passengers only At present the Terminal 3 Etihad Terminal which was inaugurated in 2009 is being expanded for USD 50 million QaTar Passenger traffic is growing rapidly in Qatar Between 2009 and 2012 the number of passengers at Doha International Airport DOH grew by 61 to 21 2 million a growth of about 10 to 23 3 million passengers in 2013 DOH also experienced a 5 growth in overall cargo traffic in 2013 It reached to 0 9 million tons compared to 0 8 million in 2012 The new 15 5 billion USD airport in Doha Hamad International Airport which is built within sight of the existing airport is under construction since 2006 The US company Bechtel was awarded the contract for Engineering Project Management and Construction Management for the entire airport in 2004 Originally the project should have been completed in 2009 Finally an opening was scheduled for April 2013 but had to be cancelled a few hours before the inauguration due to defects in the fire protection system A German newspaper commented with malicious pleasure Others are not any better Now a soft opening is expected mid 2014 After completion of the soft opening phase probably in 2015 the airport will have a capacity of 24 million passengers Further plans are envisioned for a capacity expansion phases II and III to 50 million passengers and 2 million tons of freight within two or three years omaN Since the Sultanate of Oman is a territorial country almost the size of Germany it operates besides international flights a network of domestic airports At the two major international airports in the country Muscat and Salalah expansion projects worth USD 5 3 billion are currently being implemented In addition a program for enlarging the regional airports is being executed Sohar its passenger capacity to 12 million In the long run three more phases are planned in order to increase the capacity to 24 million then 36 million and finally 48 million passengers With the completion of the first phase which is expected at the end of 2015 Muscat will most likely have a reserve capacity The new runway and tower are scheduled to start their operation as early as 2014 Passenger traffic at Muscat had increased between 2008 and 2012 by over 90 to 7 5 million 8 3 million were recorded in 2013 In the coming years the growth rates are likely to slow The Salalah airport has a Adam Region Ad Dakhiliyah a similar project as in Sohar etc is planned but the execution of the USD 100 million passenger terminal was temporarily shelved after the completion of the first two phases However the project has been resumed recently kUwaIT The slow progress in the implementation of the ten year long ongoing planning for the renovation expansion of the airport in Kuwait is an example of the fundamental difficulties of the country in executing large projects despite the abundance of money The need for an airport expansion has been obvious since a long time In the small and not very documents The tender for the terminal was finally announced at the end of December 2013 Now the bid submission date is on April 22 2014 and the award is expected to be in fall 2014 The construction of a new runway for USD 350 million is still in the design phase Currently the 414 million USD new administrative headquarters of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation DGCA and an apron project USD
