ensemble clément JaneQuin diabolus in musica 113 an ardent admirer of Jean Mouton s work The concert will feature religious compositions by Mouton largely written to mark such royal occasions including the mass Quem dicunt homines one of the very first par ody masses as well as the eight part motets Domine salvum fac regem and Exultet conjubilando Deo Despite his extensive œuvre including 15 masses over 100 motets and more than two dozen secular songs and although he was probably just as well known as Josquin Desprez in his day music by Jean Mouton is nowadays rarely aired Indeed many of his compositions have hardly been performed since they were written We are therefore delighted that our tal ented guests will finally be making up for this with a choice selection of his works It s always a sumptuous pleasure to witness a per formance by ENSEmbLE cLémENT jANEQuIN headed by countertenor Dominique Visse It s hence no wonder that the group founded in 1978 has already appeared twice at the festival in 2003 and 2009 This year we ll be welcoming some of them back to leipzig together with members of an other French ensemble DIAbOLuS IN muSIcA Directed by antoine Guerber since 1992 DIAbOLuS IN muSIcA specializes in French music from the Middle ages and the Renaissance In leipzig singers from the two ensembles will be performing exquisite sixteenth century Franco Flemish polyphony namely music by Jean Mouton 1459 1522 This joint programme devoted to Mouton has been inspired by the 500th anniversary of the cor onation of King Francis I of France in January 1515 Having entered louis XII s employ in 1502 Jean Mou ton was the most important musician and composer of his day at the French court He even accompanied the newly crowned king to a meeting with Pope leo X Jean mouton cantor to King Francis i 7pm michaelisKirche INTRODucTION wITh DOmINIQuE VISSE ANTOINE guERbER AND bENEDIKT LESSmANN
