O ver time maintaining a building in volves more and more expenses We invested strongly in maintenance and repair for furniture and equipment says Monica Lee Müller In the past four years these investments accounted for more than three times the annual average of the previous 14 years the managing director of HML the HKCEC s operator explains At first such measures lead to further costs But at times using the latest technologies can have a fast impact on indirect expenses Recently 1 500 lights in over 40 fire exit staircases have been replaced with sensor type dimma ble LED lighting reports Monica Lee Müller This helps reduce 80 per cent of energy con sumption which is equivalent to the annual consumption of 200 Hong Kong local resi dents Cost saving effects were also key for air conditioning usage For this purpose an ener gy saving solar film was applied to the 70 metre wide and 40 metre tall western glass wall HML also installed new equipment in the HKCEC s largest exhibition hall to moni tor air quality and provide better ventilation Other activities are routine For example the planned replacement of the carpet in the Grand Hall and Grand Foyer The maxim is quality not ostentatious quantity Many new and bigger venues are being built in the re gion says Monica Lee Müller The HKCEC is not competing in terms of size adds the HKCEC boss but we want to create a com fortable safe and convenient environment for exhibitors and buyers to trade and net work This includes the food and beverage service for which HML has embarked on an extensive restaurant renovation project Another recent major infrastructure project was the refurbishment of the sculpt ed roof of the HKCEC which is designed to resemble a bird soaring into flight and is the landmark of Hong Kong The refurbishment project took four months the bird has now been decked out in new feathers for which scaffolding was set up with a height of 65 metres width of 135 metres and depth of 11 metres The dialogue with the customers of Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Cen tre is also rather helpful At HML we treas ure customers constructive feedback says Monica Lee Müller It helps us identify serv ice gaps for continuous improvement For this reason electronic questionnaires are sent to the organisers of each event asking them to rate service quality at different stages of the project Moreover debriefing meetings are also arranged with exhibition organisers to collect first hand comments Over the past few years organisers have reported exhibitors and visitors growing demand for Wi Fi serv ices Lee Müller cites an example As one of the first venues in Asia the HKCEC has pro vided a free Wi Fi service for over a decade Meanwhile the Wi Fi network has been ex panded adding access points further up grading the speed and maximum number 5 000 of concurrent users As another result of customers feedback the HKCEC s mobile phone network was upgraded from 3G to the faster 4G standard And cutting edge 4K technology is being issued for film projec tions This benefits the HKCEC during the Hong Kong International Film TV Market Filmart www hkcec com PB 48 TradeFairs Internation al 2 2016 INTERNATIONAL HONG KONG Bird s new feathers When a building has been in use for many years the need for maintenance repair and refurbishment becomes more frequent and extensive Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre HKCEC is no exception Monica Lee Müller möchte ein angenehmes komfortables Umfeld für Aussteller und Einkäufer schaffen Monica Lee Müller wants to create a comfortable and convenient environment for exhibitors and buyers Ph ot o H KC EC
