and indirect job opportunities a year That makes around 91 000 annual jobs in total since it opened 13 years ago However it is now coming up against the limits of its ca pacity Offering just under 12 000 square me tres of exhibition space it doesn t have near ly enough capacity to cover the requirements of large international conventions The larger a conference is the more space it needs for an accompanying exhibition In addition the venue is booked almost to capacity during conference intensive months from Septem ber to November for instance Consequently the CTICC is currently be ing extended We ve had to say no to hun dreds of prospective customers in recent years reports CTICC boss Julie May Elling son Thanks to the extension we will be able to handle these events in future An other 10 000 square metres of multi function al space is being added for exhibitions and conferences and a further 3 000 square me tres for meetings Just under a year from now in March 2017 everything will be ready and the new facilities will be officially opened It means that existing events will be able to grow in size says Ellingson Ex amples include Africa Travel Week or Invest ing in African Mining It will also be possible to stage more events concurrently and attract new large conventions The World Ophthal mology Congress 2020 for example is being hosted at the Cape Town International Con vention Centre Thanks to the city s appeal as a tourist destination there are numerous hotels avail able in the vicinity of the CTICC including the adjoining Westin There is also plenty for delegates to look forward to in their time off In Cape Town itself the many attractions in clude the Victorian architecture and restau rants of the Waterfront and Long Street areas set against the backdrop formed by Table Mountain which rises over the city to to a height of 1 088 metres The area surrounding Cape Town is at least as attractive and cer tainly worth exploring With its many vine yards mountains and the university town of Stellenbosch for example there are some breathtaking experiences to be had And the Cape of Good Hope from which the city de rives its name is around 28 miles south of Cape Town www cticc co za PB FOCUS CTICC Chefin Julie May Ellingson CTICC boss Julie May Ellingson
