D uring its 90 years of history the most important UFI event has visited Africa twice 1960 saw a very special premiere The international exhibition association dared to take its annual assembly outside of Europe for the first time Casablan ca Morocco was chosen as the venue It then took 43 long years until the UFI re turned to Africa In 2003 the 70th UFI Con gress was held in Egypt s capital Cairo with an unforgettable dinner at the pyramids of Giza Now the intervening gap till the next visit to Africa has become shorter At this early point in time the UFI has already decid ed where its important event will take place in autumn 2017 Shanghai 2016 will be fol lowed one year later by the largest metropol itan region in southern Africa The Johan nesburg Expo Centre recently announced with pride that its home town Joburg had been chosen as host On the one hand the choice rewards the country for its pacemaker role in the African exhibition industry At the same time the managers from Joburg stress the importance of the selection for the entire continent Africa represents the next frontier for growth and development for UFI and a number of our partners have been working together to in crease the continent s share of regional conti nental and global business events says Craig Newman CEO of Johannesburg Expo Centre and Vice Chair of the Middle East Africa Chapter UFI We look forward to host ing this prestigious event and being involved in Africa s development as a promising future platform for the global exhibitions and events industry www expocentre co za PB 14 FOCUS TradeFairs Internation al 5 2015 UFI IN SOUTH AFRICA The congress goes to Joburg The international exhibition industry is increasingly setting its sights on the African continent Reason enough for the UFI to convene in two years time in Johannesburg for the first time Renowned partners attract the UFI Congress to Johannesburg The Johannesburg Expo Centre pro motes itself under the banner of Meetthe Heavyweights on its website This certainly applies to the recently won UFI Congress which usually brings together the Who s Who of the exhibition industry But such international events do not usual ly simply rain down from the heavens A bid such as this one requires a joint effort to be successful This was no different for the choice of holding the 2017 UFI Con gress in Johannesburg The task was to convince the decision makers from the global exhibition association during their Executive Committee Meeting in Turkey The South Africans united their forces and involved several strong partners to earn Brownie points The Johannesburg Expo Centre pulled six renowned institutions on board to support the bid process This in cluded three congress bureaus the South Africa National Convention Bureau the Gauteng Convention Event Bureau and the Johannesburg Convention Bureau Fur ther partners for the UFI Congress include the Sandton Convention Centre Tsogo Sun and South African Airways all heavy weights who in 2017 will meet other heavyweights among the participants Fachmesse Meetings Africa in Johannesburg Den Anteil des Kontinents an der MICE Industrie erhöhen Trade show Meetings Africa in Johannesburg Increasing the continent s share in the MICE industry Ph ot o T FI
