I t is important to have a presence The church shouldn t be hid ing away behind walls or fences it needs to get into conversation with all kinds of people declared Marc Witzenbacher who runs the office set up in Karlsruhe to prepare for the 11th Assembly of the World Council of Churches The assembly is the supreme decision making body of the World Council of Churches and is nor mally convened every eight years most recently in Karlsruhe from 31 August to 8 September Germany s president Frank Walter Steinmeier and Baden Württemberg s prime minister Winfried Kretschmann came to the opening session The hub of the assembly was centrally located at Karlsruhe Convention Centre Its Gartenhalle Schwarzwaldhalle Konzerthaus and Nancyhalle venues were all used On Festplatz a public square located between these buildings a flexible umbrella system called Magic Sky created a very special at mosphere With a height of 22 metres and a diameter of 42 metres it was used for morning services evening prayers and concerts The Magic Sky system covered around 4 000 square metres and offered space for up to 2 800 people Self supporting and made of translucent material to let more light through it met all visibility requirements and offered a good view of the large stage and two huge video walls The technical stage equipment included 230 spotlights four cameras and 50 loudspeakers A networking tent two catering tents a pavilion with two floors and 90 pagoda tents were set up in addition to the Magic Sky roof system during a three week preparation period Not only did these offer a lot of space but it was space that was easily ac cessible to the public In total there were a total of 45 000 square metres of event space in the centre of the city which made the assembly something of a showcase project for Karlsruher Messe und Kongressgesellschaft KMK The KMK team supported the organisers throughout the process from conception to implementation on the ground The As sembly of the World Council of Churches has a very special format It was unlike anything else we have hosted at our convention centre said Holger Klanfer the director congresses cultural events Fest platz was the event s centrepiece We are proud to have played a key part in this unique event added Britta Wirtz managing director of Karlsruher Messe und Kongressgesellschaft www messe karls ruhe de PB The best events are the ones enjoyed live and together with others Which is why we are delighted to be able to bring people together again to connect with each other and share their experiences Whether trade fair congress or event we provide superb service and the perfect location letsdotradefair Better together 11 FOCUS TradeFairs Internation al 4 2022 CONGRESSES Getting into conver sation with people Event organisers sometimes take the oppor tunity to go beyond using conference halls alone A recent event in Karlsruhe showed how to remain visible and accessible to the public
