H andling complex processes requires a great deal of experience and Thomas Bauer who heads up DSV s trade fair department in Neu Isenburg is an old hand at that The Oberbaufachtagung from which the iaf emerged was my first ex hibition says Bauer casting his mind back It was 1987 at the old Postbahnhof in Frankfurt Since then eight further editions of the international railway track technology trade fair have been held at different loca tions so there hasn t been a chance to just settle into a routine It has always been very exciting rising to the various challenges posed at the different venues says Bauer We ve been able to meet these challenges to the satisfaction of both the organiser and the exhibitors every time It was therefore no surprise that he and his DSV team were brought in again in 2022 to ensure that everything ended up in the right place in good time A trade fair like the iaf makes very par ticular demands of a logistics company some of the exhibits are just so large and heavy Our fundamental approach at this trade fair doesn t differ from that at other trade fairs explains Bauer The size and weight of the exhibits are the big difference here plus the need to use heavy lifting equipment to move those exhibits Cranes of 80 to 200 tonnes were used this year as well as forklift trucks of various sizes from 3 to 8 tonnes for lifting smaller exhibits Skilled specialists were brought in for this Our ex perienced Frankfurt based heavy lifting team helped us again with the event in Münster The biggest challenge for the logistics specialists was definitely the crane work re quired for the heavy track construction ma chines That included lifting them from heavy goods vehicles onto the tracks We al so had to use a crane to lift a track construc tion machine onto the tracks from the adja cent Westfalengas site reports Bauer We worked closely with Siegfried Krause the managing director of the VDEI the associa tion of German railway engineers which is the organiser of the iaf That was very im portant to ensure that preparations for the event went smoothly Consequently the trade fair logistics specialists of DSV were there right from the start of the setup phase at the Messe und Congress Centrum Halle Münsterland There are also many great memories from previous iaf editions One logistical challenge from the year 2009 particularly sticks in my mind says Thomas Bauer We transferred a Robel overhead line mainte nance vehicle onto a road trailer from the track at the railway station behind the trade fair centre he relates It then had to be brought to the trade fair centre with a police escort and lifted by crane onto the track on which it was to be exhibited The dimen sions of this vehicle which was 25 metres long 2 70 metres wide and 3 77 metres high and weighed 70 tonnes give you some idea of the logistical challenge involved Every thing went well and we were able to place the vehicle safely on its track reports Bauer www dsv com PB 35TradeFairs Internation al 3 2022 PRACTICE TRADE FAIR LOGISTICS Transporting large and heavy exhibits The railway track technology trade fair iaf takes place every four years This year it was held in Münster from 31 May to 2 June The only official transport and logistics company used was DSV Eine große Herausforde rung für die DSV Logistik spezialisten waren die so genannten Kranungen der Gleisbaumaschinen The so called crane lifts of the track laying machines were a major challenge for the DSV s logistics specia lists Ph ot o D SV
