F or the 70 exhibition centres and all trade fair service providers September has been and will be challenging with at least 45 fairs In October there will be another 45 events on the agenda They in clude the biggest trade show in the world Bauma in Munich and the world s no 1 trade fair for plastics and rubber K in Düsseldorf And another 40 trade fairs are planned for November This means a hith erto unknown tight schedule caused by forced postponements cancellations and trade fair bans of previous years The exhi bition industry is putting all its energy and commitment into an unprecedented trade show programme says Jörn Holtmeier Af ter the lifting of trade fair bans past shows have been successful despite pandemic re strictions at home and abroad points out the managing director of the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry AUMA Berlin Most exhibitors are back they know that trade shows provide a boost for business However a return to normal is still on shaky ground due to external influences Meanwhile the trade show industry faces rising uncertainties They are coupled with various ongoing crises As reasons AUMA cites both the explosion in energy prices and inflation among others The trade fair indus try itself is therefore facing increasing set backs observes AUMA Moreover new Covid restrictions are being discussed in Ger many for the winter half year Despite the relaunch of trade shows we expect econom ic losses to exceed twelve billion euros again this year predicts Jörn Holtmeier Compared to the pre pandemic situa tion exhibitor numbers at German trade shows have reached a level of around 70 per cent since April Whereas visitor figures were on average around 55 per cent of pre pan demic levels recaps AUMA The reason for this are allegedly long term Covid restric tions in Germany and moreover for entry to Germany for example regarding the recog nition of foreign Covid vaccinations Above all export and entry restrictions of Asian countries are supposedly hampering a fur ther recovery of visitor figures Key German embassies and consulates are also unable to issue visas to foreign exhibitors and trade visitors for trade shows in Germany in a timely manner The trade fair association un derlines that visitors and exhibitors from Asia are of huge importance for the international role of world leading trade fairs in this coun try However compared to the situation at the beginning of the year when trade show gates were largely closed the glass is half full After all despite the looming clouds on the horizon things are currently looking much better Back then in the first quarter of 2022 the most important trade show quar ter almost 120 trade fairs in Germany had to be cancelled as AUMA reminds us These events were banned or restricted by the au thorities and the economic consequences were drastic This alone means a total eco nomic loss of around nine billion euros the trade fair association points out All in all AUMA puts the shortfall since March 2020 at 55 billion euros www auma de PB 15 FOCUS TradeFairs Internation al 3 2022 GERMANY An unprecedented trade show programme After a hot trade show summer with 140 events a stormy trade fair autumn is about to begin for the German exhibition indus try However the prospects seem uncertain Trotz anlaufendem Messegeschäft rechnen wir auch in diesem Jahr mit über zwölf Milliar den Euro volkswirt schaftlichem Ver lust prognostiziert Jörn Holtmeier Despite the relaunch of trade shows we expect economic los ses to exceed twelve billion euros again this year predicts Jörn Holtmeier Ph ot o S te ffe n Ku gl er A U M A
