Germany and Malaysia A Close Economic Relationship 27ECONOMICS The economic relations between Germany and Malaysia started in 1960 when the Investment Guarantee Agreement was concluded by the two Governments Ever since the memorable event Malaysia has become a favourable business destination for German companies in Southeast Asia while Germany is deemed an important source of investment and trading partner for Malaysia Germany is Malaysia s largest investor from the European Union with more than 400 German companies operating in Malaysia In the first six months of 2016 Malaysia received RM6 44 billion of investment from German companies Malaysia is also the second biggest trading partner for Germany in ASEAN with a bilateral trade volume of 11 8 billion Euros in 2015 On 26 September 2016 the Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak made his first official visit to Germany at the invitation of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel The trade volume and the visit of the Malaysian Prime Minister are strong evidence of the close economic relations between both countries The Malaysian German Chamber of Commerce and Industry MGCC together with the German Embassy and Germany Trade and Invest gtai is actively involved through a broad range of activities and services to further strengthen the economic ties MIDA Germany Bundesregierung Jesco Denzel Bundesregierung Jesco Denzel MIDA Germany
