11FOCUS Speaking of history Dato Weiler has left his strong footprint in Penang Being the German Honorary Consul of Penang for more than 23 years the founder of the German School Association and German Business Association he has contributed much to the development of Penang especially in creating infrastructure and attracting expatriates He was offered to become the Honorary of Consul by the then German Ambassador Wilfried Vogeler I think the offer was given to me because I was very active in the local and German community I was a member of Malaysian German Society the Swimming Club the Sports Club the Penang Club Frepenca and Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce Industry Therefore I had a lot of connections and I could help connect people to address their concerns Besides connecting Germans in Penang the German Association also conducts German classes for expatriates kids to enable them to learn their mother tongue In the early days there were already three international schools in Penang This served as an excellent tool to attract expatriates to live in the city The German community in Penang grew rapidly Dato Weiler recalling stories about how he has helped others during his tenure as Honorary Consul of Penang Name changed as the person wishes to remain anonymous And how did Dato Weiler himself end up in Penang Back then I was managing my own business in Germany when I met Mr Oeding Erdel in 1976 over some business matters He was looking for someone to manage his company in Malaysia and I saw an interesting job opportunity opening up I slowed down my own business and accepted a one year working contract in Malaysia My initial intention was just to learn about ways to manage business However when I met my wife in Malaysia I changed my mind and the rest is history
