4 MGCC PERSPECTIVES MAY JUN 2018 EDITORIAL The future with Industry 4 0 is taking place right now at Infineon Infineon has embarked on robotic assembly lines precision engineering and computer controlled processes And we have grasped these technologies and incorporated them into our strategy development and innovation process at Infineon Malaysia s highly integrated sites in Melaka and Kulim Together we stay ahead and achieve much success through higher profitability better energy efficiency and improved productivity to shape for the better tomorrow www infineon com Part of your life Part of tomorrow Shaping tomorrow s technology Dear Members Readers In the 14th General Elections which took place on 9 May 2018 we became witness to the first electoral transfer of power since Malaysia s independence in 1957 The surprise victory of the opposition signified a fundamental change to the structure of Malaysia s political system and maybe even her society At the same time the solemn event of a peaceful and democratic expression of a nation s will pushed Malaysia onto the headlines of German media and into the focus of public attention around the world The Malaysian German Chamber of Commerce and Industry congratulates Malaysia for this achievement and wishes the new government all the best in the time to come For the German business community in Malaysia and their Malaysian partners the main question today is whether teamwork and stability can be secured in the nation in order to provide the framework for positive social and economic development The extent to which the new government s agenda will lead to a shift of major economic policies is still uncertain Modifications of major elements of the existing economic framework e g replacing the GST or reinstating fuel subsidies may affect the financing costs for entrepreneurs significantly Even though changes in some areas of economic policies are inevitable predictability reliability and consistency of the initiated changes to the existing economic policies are of the highest importance for the sensitive equilibrium of the financial setting for a typical small or medium sized enterprise For decades Malaysia has been an attractive destination for investors as the overall condition of its economy is healthy and the growth rate is intact In the first quarter of 2018 imports were at almost 70 billion MYR and slightly lower than during the same period in 2017 Exports had been showing a strong growth in the first two quarters of 2017 slowing down slightly in the second half of the 2017 But in March 2018 exports stood at almost 85 billion MYR a new national record A 1 1 growth is forecasted for the period of June August 2018 which is a slightly lower than the expectations of 2 1 growth as reported in January 2018 Nevertheless the fundamental factors remain putting Malaysia in a position of positive economic development and keeping the country in the top ranks of destinations for FDI in the region Challenges to Malaysia s competitiveness can be found in a few areas such as public procurement and awarding procedures hidden taxes and duties on certain goods opaque and slow administration surprising overnight changes of applicable rules and regulations as well as rifts along cultural and ethnic lines Especially in the field of culture and mentality the exchange of thoughts and experience with representatives from other countries can be helpful Therefore in this issue and for the upcoming football World Cup season we hope that we will have the chance to celebrate the wins of our German national team with our equally football crazy Malaysian friends Sports can be a form of bringing together people of different nationality ethnical and religious background in celebration With this and more topics we hope to provide an interesting read to all of you and once again we wish Malaysia a prosperous and peaceful future Daniel Bernbeck Executive Director Yours
