MGCC PERSPECTIVESMAY JUN 2018 57 GERMAN INSTITUTIONS Sprinting to the finish Ph ot o by R R ich ar de t Kicking off with the high jump competition this year s Federal Youth Games of the German School Kuala Lumpur was held for three days beginning on Thursday 22 March 2018 Students from Year 5 onwards had to qualify for this event during their regular physical education sessions at school Nearly all of them succeeded in this endeavour which contributed to the high spirit prevailing in the packed gym The Principal Dr Ulrich Mayer presented the opening speech at the Panasonic Stadium in Shah Alam The ceremony was followed by the middle distance race event Cheered on by classmates teachers and parents the students demonstrated their perseverance throughout the 800m and 1000m The week long preparation during physical education lessons really had been worth the effort Disciplines such as sprint long jump and shot putting throwing were carried out next Maximilian Beyerlein succeeded in setting a new school record in the discipline long shot 200 g with an outstanding distance of 62m The sports events came to close with the 4x100m relay races on that day in excellent weather conditions The successful sports competitions culminated in a grand award ceremony held on the following Monday during the first two school sessions Numerous medals and certificates as well as remarkable photos depicting the competitions showcased our students outstanding achievements Karolin Eggert and Miguel Wenzel were celebrated as the school winners of 2018 and emerged at the very top of the podium as champions of the athletics pentathlon Federal Youth Games 2018 by the German School Kuala Lumpur
