Values guide how communities live together in a sensible and secure way To make va lues more objective and avoid arbitrariness they are la id down among others in standards Neither values nor standards exist for their own sake They are developed for people by people At Austr ian Standards practitioners develop standards for practical application and ensure that everything fits together well at work at leisure and at home To achieve the broadest possible acceptance the standardization process is transparent and open to all stakeholders DR IVEN BY MAK ING SENSE The purpose of standards is to enhance our life and improve the framework conditions for business soci ety and the environment Standards must make sense They are never an end in themselves Standards have long become an inestimable economic factor as they annually add around EUR 2 5 billion to Austria s economic performance An export oriented country like Austria owes one fourth of its economic growth to standardization Standard s help dismantle barriers to trade and open up new markets Not only big Austrian companies use standards as a stepping stone More than one hal f of the economic actors participating in standardization have always come from small and medium sized enterprises I NDEPENDENT AND EFF IC IENT The development of standards requires a neutral basis an independent environment and modern infrastruct ure Since 1920 Austrian Standards has guaranteed that the standardization process is transparent and efficient in Austria All parties involve d have to join forces to ensure that this can also be done at the usual quality level in future on the basis of the new Standardization Act
