15 Dipl Ing Dr Karl Grün In his function of Director Development the physicist heads the field of standards development and manages for example committees on radiation protection quality and environmental management CSR management and IT consultancy Open innovation for almost 100 years It is in the nature of standards that they are continuously developed and adapted to changing requirements in an open process Thus open innovation has already been practiced at Austrian Standards for almost 100 years The number of ÖNORM stan dards slightly declined in 2015 Current topics of standardization are industry 4 0 nanotechnology and cloud computing Owing to these new topics the number of new participants rises The standards statistic of 2015 shows While 1 620 new ÖNORMs were published 1 994 documents were withdrawn Hence there was a decline by 374 standards in 2015 Purely national standards only accounted for 8 7 percent of all new publications in 2015 Thus the trend of the past years continued The main task now is to keep the body of European standards up to date and to inte grate innovations into standards in a sensible way All in all more than 90 percent of all standards applicable in Austria ÖNORMs are already European and or international standards today On average one European standard replaces ten national ones In the field of future oriented subjects such as industry 4 0 nanotechnology and cloud computing substantial progress was made in 2015 The German IT association Bitkom published a position paper with recommendations on how to improve the use of standard ization for digital industrial processes A roadmap was prepared for further nanotechnol ogy standardization on behalf of the EU and the first standards were already published in 2015 The topic of cloud computing was discussed by experts from 34 nations in Vienna in March 2015 The competent ISO working body convened at Austrian Standards to define future global standards for this key technology The number of new experts taking part in committees shows a particularly positive devel opment After reductions in 2012 and 2013 more new participants again joined commit tees from 2014 on In 2015 their number returned to the level of 2010 in spite of the introduction of the participation fee on 1 January 2014 This increase evidences that standards gain even further relevance as a growth driver and that more and more organizations wish to shape their own future in this way In this vein all parties interested are invited to make constructive contributions and thereby ensure the quality and acceptance of standards Dipl Ing Dr Karl Grün Director Development A world without standards on video The International Organization for Standardization ISO also addressed the question of what the world would look like without standards It launched a video competition on World Standards Day More than 130 videos from all over the world gave entertaining answers to this question Standards 2015 Web tip http www worldstandardscooperation org speakstandards results
