Living Standards Award Competence from Austria sets standards internationally In January 2016 Austrian Standards already presented the Living Standards Awards for the second time and again honoured companies and organizations which use and manage standards in an outstanding way and contribute to reducing their complexity The winners were the Province of Upper Austrian the Polymer Com petence Center Leoben OTIS and the Federal Testing Centre TGM in Vienna Austrian standards on an innovative testing method for gas and water pipes rules for complete building docu mentation and new test methods for escalators and mov ing walks are close to gaining international acceptance and becoming European or International Standards Austrian dialogue forum on construction working together for clear and simple rules for building Starting signal for a simplification of construction rules From the point of view of policy makers and professional associations standards raise the cost of construction and housing In close co operation with the Federal Construc tion Trade Organization Austrian Standards therefore launched a dialogue forum on construction in Austria The kick off meeting held in January 2016 started the identification of problems and potentials A crowd sourc ing initiative organized online at www dialogforumbau at made it possible to ensure easy access for all parties affect ed and interested until the end of April Proposals will be discussed in working groups up to the end of 2016 and subsequently online again The recommendations derived therefrom will be passed on to the competent committees in early 2017 According to Hans Werner Frömmel President of the Federal Construction Trade Organization who chairs the dialogue forum the screening of construction standards has clear objectives This is about affordability readability and simplification Only if all construction stakeholders contribute to the dialogue forum especially those who criticize excessive regulation this exercise can succeed Insights 2016 13 https www austrian standards at newsroom meldung kompetenz aus oesterreich setzt sich international durch www austrian standards at dialogforumbau
