W hen many people come together in one place for an event there is al ways the risk of some kind of dis aster That s due to the complex dynamics of crowds of people Something may happen somewhere that then triggers a chain reaction Standards and regulations are meant to help says a slightly sceptical sounding Angelika Kneidl the managing di rector of a company called accurate in Mu nich But standards like this can only have an impact if the human factor is taken into account she continues How individuals are going to behave is inherently unpredictable and brings huge challenges A good example is their response time when a building has to be evacuated There are people at events who want to finish their cocktail no matter what explains Kneidl It s been paid for after all Others want to quickly get their jacket before they leave the building There are psychological aspects as well Some es cape routes lead into tunnels which many people are afraid of Motion simulations that take into ac count interdependencies provide a more comprehensive picture of possible scenarios not unlike crash tests for cars Scenarios in which people squeeze through bottlenecks for example can be simulated well by means of 2D or 3D visualisations Fictitious terrorist attacks can also be simulated What would happen if an exit is blocked after a bomb has exploded Sometimes motion simulation can produce surprising results Let s take a beer tent for 6 000 people continues Kneidl coming up with a practical example The simulation we ran confirmed that the exits would become bottlenecks as expected In terestingly however further unexpected bot tlenecks occurred outside between the beer tent and the kitchen area The layout had to be modified accordingly Another example is an ice stadium where the widening of the escape routes was being discussed The simulation of an evac uation revealed the potential for bottlenecks in the seating area explains Kneidl If any one there responds too slowly everyone else has to wait she points out Wider escape routes wouldn t help with that at all More escape routes do not automatically mean greater safety In fact the exact opposite can also occur Additional escape routes can be come further bottlenecks The bottom line is that motion simulations do not eliminate all dangers but the residual risk is reduced The dynamic effects of crowds of people can be predicted emphasises Kneidl who also wrote her PhD thesis on this subject We run through the scenarios that occur in emergen cies she says Tragedies such as Hillsbor ough or Duisburg could perhaps have been prevented or at least mitigated if this had been done there www accu rate de PB 34 FOCUS TradeFairs Internation al 1 2017 EVENTS LOCATIONS Emergency scenarios Eventforum Mannheim organised by Baden Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University DHBW was held again at the end of January Angelika Kneidl delivered a presentation on crowd simulations Third Eventforum Mannheim Baden Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University DHBW held its third EventforumMannheim on 26 January This is an industry conference held in connection with thedegree programme in trade fair convention and event management and it again at tracted high profile speakers The presentations focused on the future opportunities and challenges for corporate events as well as on compliance and on large events This year s Eventforum finished off with an excellent panel discussion DHBW Mannheim students inter viewed well known experts such as Daniel Hopp SAP Arena and the musician and producer Michael Herberger a former member of the band Söhne Mannheims The participants re ceived fascinating insights into the future of large events from different perspectives The framework within which the DHBW event was embedded this year is worth mentioning For the first time the Eventforum was held as part of the epicto VIP Tage event in Edingen Neckarhausen Although there were plenty of prominent guests VIP in this case stands for video interaction and projection In addition there was over 2 000 square metres of exhibi tion space where the latest products and applications of state of the art event technologies were presented www mke dhbw mannheim de Beim Event forum 2017 waren die Aus gänge für alle in Sichtweite At Eventforum 2017 everybody had a good view of the exits Ph ot o E ve nt fo ru m M an nh ei m
