A t international conventions or large events people are increasingly being offered mainstream cuisine That is regrettable and puts you in mind of pedestrian zones or shopping centres which are becoming increasingly similar all over the world But there are still authentic experi ences to be had in the Far East in particular that go beyond the standard fare that is com monly provided Take Expo 2012 in Yeosu in South Korea some of the staff of the German pavilion and invited delegations were staying at a hotel not far from the Expo site The ac commodation was good but the breakfast took a lot of getting used to for Europeans with largely unfamiliar seafood specialities as far as the eye could see On the suggestion of the guests from Germany the kitchen came up with something else without further ado a kind of ham omelette It was a fairly exotic take on an omelette but the guests neverthe less enjoyed starting their day with it Thai cuisine has a legendary reputation At one of the recent editions of the MICE conference Connections Plus the Thailand Convention Exhibition Bureau invited in ternational journalists to an evening event Three elements water fire and ice were combined for a really special culinary event On stepping out of the elevator guests en tered a room with bluish colours and light ing representing the first element water There they were able to help themselves to seafood arranged on small islands in the wa ter Young women in body paint caught the eye and brought the element to life at the same time introducing a touch of the surreal After around 20 minutes the media repre sentatives were invited into the elevator again to go to the next floor There they en tered a scene presented in various warm reddish shades with artificial flames the ele ment of fire In this room they could choose their main course from a variety of speciali ties The third element ice ensured a cool atmosphere for the dessert A spectacular event revolving around food and involving plenty of local colour was staged a few years ago at the Annual Meet ings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group in the multicultural metropolis of Singapore The buffet at the huge open air closing party on the bank of Marina Bay was a suitably colourful affair The organisers had come up with something special to link the event to its host city on the Equator There were sections representing the different districts of Singapore with their own cuisine Chinese specialities were served in Chinatown Indian delicacies in Little In dia and Malay food in Kampong Glam Event catering involving thousands of guests is nor mally a huge challenge and often a matter of taste But on this warm tropical september evening against the backdrop of the city state s skyline everything seemed just right It was a successful combination of delicious local dishes and the cultural diversity and identity of Singapore PB 25TradeFairs Internation al 3 4 2015 IMEX CONGRESSES Good food counts for a lot at meetings Modern facilities and smooth organisation are a must In addi tion destinations in the Far East can also add value with their cuisine as previous events have shown Nicht alle koreanischen Leckereien sind mit den europäischen Frühstücksvorstellungen kompatibel Not all Korean delicacies are compatible with German breakfast tastes Ph ot o T FI
