T he bamboo scaffolding inside the ven ue were a clear sign you were entering a building site HML the management company started work on upgrading the centre at the end of June and the HKCEC has been a hive of activity This was all part of HML s five year advancement project Around a billion Hong Kong dollars some 116 million euros are to be invested in the renovation of numerous HKCEC buildings Work has been carried out recently in the convention hall theatres foyers and Hall 3FG The audio system air handling systems water pipes and fire service installations have all been upgraded Carpets operable parti tions and wall fabrics have been replaced and toilets and ancillary rooms have been re furbished Subsequent stages of the mod ernisation project will take in other facilities at the HKCEC The changes will also make a contribution to saving energy and water The investments made will pay off in the long term even without taking their environmental impact into ac count On completion of the project in 2024 the HKCEC will provide a safer more comfortable more efficient envi ronment for all users Between now and then however herculean efforts will be re quired the modernisation work at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre rep resents a huge task for all involved in terms of planning organisation and logistics After all the HKCEC hosts over 1 000 events a year are held including trade fairs conven tions company events seminars banquets and entertainment And these will continue to take place while the construction work goes on Given the scale of the advance ment project and the HKCEC s busy event calendar scheduling each stage of the project is a challenging task explains Monica Lee Müller HML s managing director We are spreading the work out over five years in or der to minimise the impact on event opera tions Lee Müller is grateful for the under standing and cooperation of the event or ganisers involved who will of course enjoy the benefits of the project in the medium term The work completed last year can serve as a blueprint for that The entire Wi Fi system was completely revamped and now this complimentary service is faster and of fers a higher density and significantly greater stability Good progress has also been made with the installation of the smart building management system which makes use of IoT technology In addition a start has been made on putting 5G tech nology in place As soon as the Hong Kong Government assigns the 5G spectrum visi tors to the HKCEC will be able to enjoy the benefits of the new standard www hkcec com PB 54 TradeFairs Internation al 3 2019 INTERNATIONAL HONG KONG Improving comfort efficiency and safety To play in the major league you need first class infrastruc ture The Hong Kong Conven tion and Exhibition Centre HKCEC is investing in state of the art facilities Monica Lee Müller The work was spread out over five years in order to minimise the impact on event operations Monica Lee Müller Durch die Ausdehnung der Arbeiten können wir die Auswirkungen auf das Veranstaltungsgeschehen minimieren Ph ot o H M L Kongresshalle mit neuem Teppich und der erst im Februar neu installierten LED Wand Convention Hall with new carpet and the newly installed LED Wall added in February Ph ot o H M L
