I n recent years the Cape Town Interna tional Convention Centre CTICC has taken big strides towards greater sustain ability This success is now also an im portant selling point emphasise the decision makers at the CTICC The centre continually reduces its energy and water consumption In addition it provides services for the safe disposal and wherever possible recycling of its waste A concerted effort has also been made to raise awareness amongst CTICC staff and clients of the importance of reduc ing their environmental impact For years we have been assisting our clients to reduce reuse recycle and upcycle what some would consider to be waste whether that be mate rials used to build exhibition stands or excess food so that we can divert as much waste as possible from landfill says CTICC CEO Julie May Ellingson In the 2017 2018 finan cial year the CTICC managed that with 84 percent of its waste The centre s partnership with Investing in African Mining Indaba a conference with an exhibition ensures that less waste wood from exhibition stands ends up at the dump At this year s event at the CTICC a total of 24 000 kg of this wood was donated a part of it to the Orion School for Persons with Disability which cares for children and adults with physical mental intellectual and neurological disabilities The school will be using the wood to make tables and book shelves for their classrooms as well as coffee coasters trays and place mats as part of their arts and crafts and income generating pro gramme The rest of the wood went to a fac tory in Stellenbosch where plaster bricks are manufactured in a sustainable energy effi cient process The wood is used there as fuel for the oven Sustainability is everyone s re sponsibility emphasises Julie May Elling son Sustainability considerations are there fore central to every operation every deci sion and every event at the CTICC Just as a clean environment has a posi tive impact on our health safe food clearly does as well The CTICC has looked into this and now has ISO 22000 certification in food safety management This allows the CTICC to show its clients and visitors that it has an excellent food safety management system in place enthuses Ellingson ISO 22000 cov ers every step of the food chain she ex plains That allows us to constantly and consistently monitor all the food that comes out of our kitchens from acquisition to preparation and finally consumption Im portant components of this are regular hy giene audits maintenance of equipment and weekly in house training That helps the CTICC to make a positive impression and contributes to business success In the most recent fiscal year the Cape Town Interna tional Convention Centre increased its rev enue by 14 2 percent to 246 million rand 15 million euros Almost 9 000 jobs were creat ed during the same period www cticc co za PB 62 TradeFairs Internation al 2 2019 INTERNATIONAL SOUTH AFRICA Reusing and upcycling The things that get used at trade fairs and conventions are worth something and should therefore be valued It is possible to reuse a lot of these things afterwards as is done in Cape Town Julie May Ellingson hat Grund zur Freude Im letzten Fiskaljahr steigerte das CTICC den Umsatz um 14 2 Prozent Julie May Ellingson has good reason to be happy In the last fiscal year the CTICC grew its revenue by more than 14 2 per cent Ph ot o C TI CC
