W hen will Berlin s major new air port BER be opening That s a question has been a running joke for some years now In the mean time the old Berlin airports Tegel and Schönefeld are still in operation And in view of the continuing delays at the BER construction site it s good to know that more reliable construction partners are getting a look in elsewhere At Schönefeld for exam ple where passenger numbers increase every year and have now reached 13 million an nually Formerly East Germany s main hub the airport is now in urgent need of renova tion While construction work is going on the operating company needs a temporary hall for departures This is a situation that seems made for Neptunus a company based in the Netherlands Neptunus has a wealth of experience of building temporary halls for trade fairs and other events but also for terminals at inter national airports The company has erected state of the art temporary buildings at Ams terdam Airport Schiphol Malta International Airport and Magdeburg Cochstedt Airport At Schönefeld in Berlin the Düsseldorf branch of Neptunus combined two modular building systems An Evolution III hall covers an area of over 2 200 square metres Adjoining it is a 189 square metre Flexolution II hall What sets the Evolution III system apart is its construction system the space frame roof structure is erected using a hydraulics system quickly and smoothly Neptunus needed only three weeks to build the termi nal It took a further three months to com plete the complex internal work required be fore the terminal building went into opera tion in December 2018 The temporary termi nal will be used for a minimum of 18 months There may be a further six months added to that Inside the terminal there are five departure gates a restaurant a chil dren s play area toilets and eight emergency exits There is space for around 1 200 pas sengers and each of the five departure gates has two pre boarding desks and pre boarding areas for 120 passengers each Neptunus was and remains responsible for the whole project That includes the elec tricity supply lighting heating the supply and exhaust ventilation system the toilets and the installation of non slip flooring In addition an innovative fire alarm system was installed together with Siemens Neptunus managing director Dorrie Eilers explains Working on a construction project at a very busy international airport presents a lot of challenges and necessitates strict se curity measures Special permits are needed and checks have to be carried out on every one working at the site When you put up a building at an oper ational airport all the building materials and equipment have to be delivered at night These are challenges that are to be expect ed when you are working in a high security area However our team at Neptunus has plenty of experience and all the expertise required to meet these challenges and supply high quality tempo rary buildings cost effectively and to schedule adds Eilers www neptunus eu JK 52 TradeFairs Internation al 1 2019 TEMPORARY BUILDINGS Temporary terminal at Schönefeld Not enough capacity available for a trade fair That s where temporary buildings from Neptunus come in But it s not just events that they are used for Airports use them too PRACTICE Im Inneren der tem porären Halle gibt es fünf Abflug Gates und es besteht Platz für rund 1 200 Fluggäste The temporary termi nal has five departure gates and space for so me 1 200 passengers Ph ot o N ep tu nu s
