T he study was commissioned by the Imex Group as part of this year s Legacy theme and conducted by dig ital media company Skift The report covers over 40 pages going into some detail on why and how some medium sized cities have successfully positioned themselves as hubs of progress and knowledge The results show how cities make conscious use of the innovative strengths of their local economies in an effort to become incubators of change and drivers of new ideas In addition they have created special experiences for visitors and event participants and developed new coalitions with regional partners This is an important trend in the global meeting and event industry observes Imex boss Carina Bauer We want this study to demonstrate new approaches and perspectives to plan ners agencies interest groups and of course other destinations as well At the same time it indicates how to make use of these promising avenues for promotional purposes But that s not to im ply that large established cities have short comings insists Bauer On the contrary Particularly in terms of marketing infra structure services and capacities large cities still have advantages over smaller ones Nevertheless the study illustrates how smaller cities in particular meaning in most cases cities with a population of under a million have managed to add value and find new ways to promote themselves and thus attract visitors These cities work close ly with leading local figures and companies in order to make use of their own particular strengths The prospects are exciting partic ularly when you look at the value chain be lieves Carina Bauer The big change is that these medium 32 FOCUS TradeFairs Internation al 2 2018 IMEX IN FRANKFURT Using the strengths of the local economy MICE industry players from all over the world are coming together from 15 to 17 May Ahead of that the Imex organisers have published a study on the importance of medium sized cities for meetings New Russian Convention Bureau The Russian Convention Bureau wasfounded in November 2017 by theRoscongress Foundation the Russian Export Center the International Foundation of Technology and Investment and the market research compa ny R C It is ef fectively a one stop shop for or ganisers looking for a country in which to stage their events The main aim is to shape support and promote Russia as a busi ness and invest ment friendly country The con vention bureau also brings to gether industry specific marketing information and works closely with regional convention bureaus playing a coordinating role Furthermore it is involved in a wide variety of international industry events and associations The bureau represents different destinations and venues in the Russian regions under a unified Russian event brand All these efforts and activities serve to promote Russia as an attractive desti nation for investment international trade fairs and conventions Every year Russia further enhances its reputation as an attractive and appealing host country for international business events says Alexey Kalachev director of the Russian Convention Bureau Thanks to the professional event manage ment market the expertise avail able and the modernised infrastructure Russia can host even the most challenging events Effective means of attract ing international events are re quired now more than ever The new convention bureau is a prac tical solution set up with the support of the Government of the Russian Federation that will facilitate the develop ment of the Russian event industry and en sure its integration in the global market www russiacb com en Ph ot o R us si a Co nv en tio n Bu re au
