Carin Kindbom singles out three further milestones in the history of Svenska Mässan The first being when it went international in 1950 Companies from our neighbouring Nordic countries were invited to exhibit at the SECC for the first time she reports and three years later exhibitors were invited from the rest of the world The second milestone was the start of a new business model In 1993 Svenska Mässan took over Hotel Goth ia which had been built right next door to the SECC in 1984 This process eventually led to our present one stop offering with everything under one roof says Kindbom Milestone number 3 came in 2014 The com pletion of the third tower along with a string of other initiatives including restaurants a spa lounge areas art and pop up stores We now had a total of 1 200 hotel rooms and be came one of the biggest hotels in Europe This was one of the most significant mile stones on the company s journey to becom ing the intercontinental meeting place Svens ka Mässan is today The fact that the company can offer a ho tel exhibition halls meeting rooms restau rants spa and other facilities all under one roof gives it a competitive edge This is the key to our results points out Carin Kind bom This unique combination will be one of our main drivers even in the future To tie in with this Svenska Mässan announced ex pansion plans last April with a focus on three areas The first being to upgrade the en trances enabling the fair to increase its visi tor capacity and stage a greater number of events simultaneously Secondly a fourth ho tel and office complex is to be built next to the venue to increase hotel capacities by 60 per cent to 2 000 rooms And thirdly more flexible meeting areas are to be created The company is also very optimistic about 2018 Our expectation is a new record year forecasts CEO Kindbom With several large exhibitions in 2018 we look forward to letting our 2 million visitors experience every thing we have to offer As an example she singles out Scanpack Northern Europe s leading packaging exhibition with some 500 exhibitors and 14 000 visitors from 50 coun tries in October Many of them will stay at the Svenska Mässan hotel and dine at the restau rants there www svenskamassan se PB 46 TradeFairs Internation al 1 2018 INTERNATIONAL T he anniversary will be marked in many different ways in 2018 Among other things there will be a celebration event in spring Without doubt it will also commemorate the beginnings of the exhibi tions business in Gothenburg At that time a number of proactive businessmen saw the need for a commercial meeting place in our city says Carin Kindbom Their vision was a trade fair that would establish links be tween industry crafts and trade says the head of Svenska Mässan On 8 July 1918 Scandinavia s first fair was inaugurated by the Swedish King and Queen the National Trade Fair which turned out to be even more popular than expected attracting 530 ex hibitors and resulting in a profit of 53 183 Swedish kroner This marked the start of an exhibition tradition SWEDEN 100 years of fairs in Gothenburg This summer Svenska Mässan the Swedish Exhibition Congress Centre will be celebrating its big anniversary In addition the company is shaping up for the future Der schwedische König Gustav V mit Königin Viktoria bei der Messeeröffnung 1918 Swedish King Gustav V with Queen Victoria at the opening of the fair in 1918 Carin Kindbom erwartet dieses Jahr einen neuen Rekordumsatz Carin Kindbom expects a new record turnover this year Ph ot o S ve ns ka M äs sa n Ph ot o S ve ns ka M äs sa n
