64    Volkswagen  Martin Hofmann automotiveIT 2012 Volkswagen s work environment is supposed to excel at applications that are intuitive to use So what must you do specifically to improve the user s experience Like many other companies we see a great need for action on this Young professio nals bring IT experience from their private spheres that is often hard to bring into harmony with the company s reality We have to respond to that This makes busi ness sense as well Every day more than 1 million users come into contact with our IT systems and B2B platforms within the company and at our dealers and suppliers If we have to hold expensive training sessi ons in advance the costs quickly rise into the millions at the expense of the value creation chain We want to change that and direct our early attention to ease of use during the planning and rollout of new software Figuratively speaking we want more touch swipe and scale and fewer Ex cel tables That may work for new apps But what do you do with your inventory of software We have established a user centered de sign team which is analyzing our applica tions and developing new user interfaces Martin Hofmann Martin Hofmann has worked at the Volkswagen Group for 11 years He previously was emplo yed at the IT services company Electronic Data Systems EDS where he held international re sponsibilities most recently as the head of Di gital Markets Solutions Consulting at EDS in the U S Hofmann led the e Procurement and Supply Chain Integration area at the Volkswagen Group from 2001 to 2003 subsequently taking charge of Process and Information Management at Group Procurement Starting in 2008 he led Organiza tional Development at VW and he has been CIO of Volkswagen AG since December 2011
