Randy Mott   General Motors 53 automotiveIT 2012 How will that work in practice We are reducing the complexity of our data management At the moment there are 40 000 data feeds going into 250 data marts Each application interacts with spe cific feeds so if you change an application you have to worry about the connections Clearly if you reduce the number of data marts from 250 to one you immediately take down the complexity If you cut the number of applications by 40 pc you have again taken down the complexity And if you have all the servers side by side you have once again taken out a layer of com plexity People underestimate what this complexity costs in terms of speed the abi lity to change and the resources required to maintain the integrity of all those connec tions And as we consolidate you ll be able to get direct answers to questions rather than having to piece together the answers What kind of changes will we see in the working relationships between IT and GM s product side We re trying to do a better job of pre plan ning the work we ll be doing We re also implementing a better cost benefit analy sis system so we can talk about projects company wide in common terms That way we can identify the value of a project and make trade offs around the company We re also trying to change the speed of implementation of what we do Instead of 500 projects at once we ll work on 200 or 300 and deliver them quicker We tend to have projects that run too long so we try to commit full resources to projects so we can get in and out quickly We want to do the most important projects first and we want to deliver them quicker so we can start new ones That s also part of how you manage change You ve been on the job in a new industry for six months Has anything surprised you Compared with the other industries I ve worked in there are clear differences in are as such as what applications matter most and what issues need to be emphasized The alignment of IT to the business is different from one industry to the next Obviously a lot of the fundamental infrastructure and technology building blocks are the same But there s different emphasis and the scale is different in a company the size of Gene ral Motors Speed is also key I m learning things every day One of the things that s surprised me is the amount of IT that s run outside of the IT department That probab ly reflects the speed of the business which dictated that solutions were found through outside contracts There s certainly more of this shadow IT than I would have expected or than I have experienced in the past Interview by Arjen Bongard automotiveIT international
