Randy Mott   General Motors 51 automotiveIT 2012 You re outsourcing roughly 90 pc of IT now but want to cut that to 10 pc in a few years Are you going to be able to find the people for this We ll obviously be hiring a lot of people and we ll be exactly defining what is GM and what is not over the next five years There s obviously a high demand for skilled IT staff and we ll use our innovation centers to tap into the marketplace We don t just need experienced talent which is in high demand but will also tap into university systems We believe we can attract IT staff looking for employment that s actually fun We re in an industry that does fun stuff we build cars and we think our particular in dustry is pretty appealing Having a global business also holds a lot of appeal and our commitment and business model offers ca reer growth and opportunities But it will take some time Where are all the new GM IT people going to be located We want to have the innovation centers where the technology is today and we think we can push toward a more collaborative model by increasing our footprint in a number of US locations But we re a global business and we ll also increase all over the world So if you figure out where we ve got market share you can predict where there will be additional growth in terms of the business requirement and growth in IT It will be a balance but a lot of development we ll try to draw from some of the innovation centers located in what is one of the bigger technology markets in the world the US Wouldn t it be more practical to implement this IT transformation with existing IT service providers It would mean you wouldn t have to effectively build up a whole new organization We re moving toward a goal where 80 pc of our people are active in development De velopers need to be good at three things technology business acumen and leader ship The automotive industry is a different business and people need a good under standing of some of its unique elements to be able to apply technology Leadership is important for working within the teams and with business partners We like people to develop a long term understanding of the business and the business needs And I would like people to have knowledge not only for the duration of a six month pro ject but for a number of years You learn new things every year and I would like that knowledge to be part of the portfolio of capabilities we offer the business Our IT people will be highly interactive with the business By announcing your plans have you compromised your relationship with your big IT service providers such as We needed to take a fundamental look at how we can do IT differently
