50    General Motors  Randy Mott automotiveIT 2012 sources It s a juggling act to get that mix changed and it will take time to do it It s not a one year deal but more of a three year transformation And there s still a lot to do even in that timeframe You re planning to reduce GM s 23 global data centers to just two One of them will be here in Michigan Is the global communication infrastructure good enough for a company that s active in just about every country in the world In addition to the two large data centers we will probably have six cacheing centers as well Large engineering applications and some other applications with very large data loads need to be close to the working environment But yes two big data centers will work for us The world today is pretty well connected from a telecommunications point of view With the latest technology and the right configuration I believe we can enhance the service we are offering our people around the world In a major transformation such as the one you re undertaking what do you prioritize You need to change the entire environ ment If you only try to tackle a few things you re constantly constrained by the things you aren t changing Choosing is losing For example about 40 pc of the roughly 2 000 applications we use at GM will be retired If I only did the data center trans formation and wouldn t tackle application simplification I would be doing a lot of un necessary work because I would be moving 700 or 800 applications that should just be retired The same is true with our data If everybody creates their own data and does their own analytics you re doing the same thing over and over again With our enter prise data warehouse you can now do your analysis once only and leverage that Will software at GM all be Cloud based in the future As we build new applications we will cer tainly to a large degree take advantage of Cloud technologies The technology de ployed in our data centers is very similar to software as a service Saas But we ll have private clouds not public clouds We want to leverage the technologies that are out there You re still using Lotus Notes throug hout the company Is that one of the software applications that will be retired We will be making transitions in a lot of technologies and mail is one of them One of the key parts of your three year transformation plan involves bring ing the bulk of your IT back in house
