Randy Mott   General Motors 49 automotiveIT 2012 What did CEO Dan Akerson and the GM board ask you to do when you joined the company in February Over the last couple of years a lot of busi ness transformation has already been underway at GM The company has been transforming the speed at which it brings new products to market it strives to do things better and more effectively across all markets Dan Akerson and the leader ship team wanted to see similar things hap pening in IT that were already happening elsewhere in the company Dan was clearly looking for IT to play a different role from the one it had been asked to play in the past Is IT going to play a more active role at GM or mostly a different one We need to have more IT executed faster to support the faster speed of business And the focus needs to be on innovation To accomplish that and stay within the af fordability constraints we have to free up resources so there was a need to take a fundamental look at how we can do IT dif ferently It s not just about saving money From an affordability standpoint it s not about spending less money but about ha ving more of the money going to things with a higher business value Today roughly 75 pc of our resources are used to support or run the day to day busi ness while 25 pc is working on the inno vation agenda Our objective is to reverse that and maybe even go a little further to get the ratio to 20 80 That s doable by ta king complexity out of the operations It s a save and invest strategy as opposed to a save only strategy Can you give us some more detail on how you plan to free up those resources for innovation One way we re taking complexity out of our IT is through data center consolidation We re doing the same on the application side where we re moving to more global applications and fewer regional and coun try specific software The latter all have an infrastructure and support element If you drive down the number of data centers and the number of applications you free up re
