02 15 unique plasticspaper 3 Interview Diversity as an Opportunity Being the new Vice President Assistec Karl Berger is facing important tasks In the interview he tells upp about Assistec s challen ges his ambitions and what he perso nally wishes for Mr Berger you have been Vice President of Greiner Assistec for a few weeks now What is your personal connection with Greiner Assistec For me Assistec is a very interesting place to work The great diversity of Assistec is so metimes seen as problematic but I see it as a great opportunity We have the opportunity to offer our clients a wide variety of things With our technical know how and the proxi mity to our clients we have the best qualifi cations for offering individual solutions at the highest level What do you think the customers appre ciate most with Greiner Assistec As diverse as the products may be I think our customers also value the individual advanta ges at Assistec I am not certain whether it is a special characteristic rather I think it is the overall package that wins our customers over But certainly the passion with which we operate our company is also an important point Your work previously involved you in innovation management you have also been doing this for a year now at Greiner Packaging what is the significance of in novations at Greiner Assistec I have actually been involved with developing innovation my entire life I have been invol ved for about 12 years with innovation ma nagement such as how to organize the de velopment of new products technologies or processes I live for innovation in terms of a truly integrated concept and I will of course do that for Assistec in my role We have the refore taken the first step and established the so called i tec team which will serve as an in house innovation platform and we will be working much more intensively than before on innovations My objective is to position Assistec as a leader in innovation Greiner Packaging recently opened a new location in Turkey What are the new markets that would be particularly inte resting for Assistec We have many options at any rate more than we can ever manage In the final ana lysis we find interesting customers almost everywhere on the globe I do not want to emphasize any particular market in geogra phic terms we intend to grow and streng then our positions in the existing locations and we will open other locations in order to achieve our objectives by 2020 But where that will be precisely I cannot yet specify Apart from geographical markets which branches do you see in Assistec s future We are already very widely positioned at the moment that is the nature of our bu siness model And there will be other bran ches possibly in sectors we have not even thought of today The important thing is for us to properly utilize our mix of technology which is why I think that it isn t so much the question about branches or geographic par ticulars that is important but the question of technologies And certainly silicone injecti on molding plays an important strategy role here with technical blow molding being the second most important In which direction will Assistec conti nue to develop What is your vision for Greiner Assistec Even at the risk of making a lame compa rison I will try comparing it nevertheless I would like to see Assistec become for the plastics supplier industry what Magna has become for the automotive supplier indus try That may be a tremendously ambitious objective but someone once said that whe never you achieve a goal it just means you were not aiming high enough I never want to have to say that about myself at some point Profile Name Karl Berger Age 45 Civil status married with a 10 year old daughter Characteristics I admire in people being open and straightforward being able to deal with conflict What I can do without foggy cloudy November weather My favorite item made of plastic the one I will develop next This historical figure impresses me I would not say that it is a person that impresses me rather it is a characteri stic Taking a chance on something new discovering the undiscovered achieving the seemingly impossible Explorers rese archers and pioneers impress me My motto There will be peace and quiet enough after you die We will be working much more intensively than before on innovations My objective is to position Assistec as a leader in innovation Karl Berger Vice President Assistec Interview
