European Coatings Show Preview December 2014 www european coatings show com 21 Focus Sound damping The technology for industrial coatings will shift Thom Hermens Leading Strategic Marketing Manager at Dow Coating Materials believes that competition between waterborne acrylics und waterborne UV is having an invigorating effect on in terior wood application Even if one technology gains the upper hand in this segment that doesn t prevent new developments by the other technology from pushing into different markets  The term industrial coat ings covers a multitude of ap plications Which technology and application do you believe is the most interesting today Thom Hermens The higher performance furniture topcoat applications such as a living room table for a mainstream furniture retailer like IKEA are becoming more and more in teresting In the market for this application we are currently seeing both waterborne acrylic and waterborne UV technolo gies competing against tradi tional 100 UV and PUD tech Thom Hermens Dow Coating Materials nologies Unfortunately it has proven difficult to deliver the required chemical resistance e g to coffee and alcohol and the rapid early blocking for supporting high speed ap plication lines Nonetheless there have been big improve ments in performance in recent years as credible solutions have entered the market Fierce competition is what drives innovation in particular the type of multi technology competition that we re seeing in the market for this applica tion  Do you think that will change in the future Hermens Fortunately a given innovation is not restricted to a single application New developments made in wa terborne acrylic technology are finding their way into new applications every day One example of a new mar ket application segment for waterborne acrylic technol ogy is liquid applied sound dampening which replaces bituminous pads in cars and reduces the noise coming from the car and the engine during driving Waterborne technology offers significant weight saving opportunities and that is important for car manufacturers The focus of the industrial coatings indus try will therefore shift in the future moving from one ap plication segment to the next wherever an opportunity aris es for an innovation to satisfy an unmet customer need  Looking back Which his torical technological improve ment was in your eyes the most important for industrial coatings Hermens For me the change from solventborne to waterborne technology has undoubtedly been the most important technology improvement for industrial coatings Even though water borne technology is not yet as advanced or as established as it is in the architectural coat ings world more and more industrial applications are converting every day from sol ventborne to waterborne The environmental benefits as well as the health and safety benefits for the user are tre mendous There is still a lot of ground to be gained in marine and protective or coil coatings applications but these appli cation segments too are us ing waterborne coatings more and more The performance of waterborne acrylic coatings has increased dramatically since they were first intro duced in the 1950s However there is still a lot more perfor mance left in them especially when it comes to fine tuning the interaction of the different ingredients that make up an 2015 Meet leading universities and institutes of the field Numerous stands inform about current research projects and educational opportunities Among many others you can find the fol lowing universities and insti tutes at the ECS U niversities at the ECS in clude the Technical Uni versity of Eindhoven the Uni versity of Applied Sciences Niederrhein the Universities of Applied Sciences from Es slingen and Munich as well as the University of Paderborn The CoRI Coatings research institute will also be part of the trade show In 2015 the private Belgian research insti tute hopes to not only further increase our visibility but also to meet the entire value chain of our sector from the raw material supplier until the end user says Carine Lefèvre director Also present will be the Dutch Polymer Institute DPI a pri vate institution which per forms research in the area of polymers and their applica tion Another recurring exhib itor at the ECS will be the iLF Institut für Lacke und Farben from Magdeburg Germany The institute understands it self as a provider of testing and screening methods in the field of paints and coatings In 2015 it will present its range of services in testing screen ing and analytics including novel methods In addition to the presentation of these services the iLF wants to use the trade show to intensify its contacts to cooperation partners explains Dr Norbert Pietschmann CEO Also present will be the Forschungsgesellschaft für Pigmente und Lacke e V from Stuttgart This institution wants to not only support research and training in the field of coatings but to cre ate a network between insti tutes students companies and end users Another ex hibitor from Stuttgart will be the Fachschule Lacktechnik which will present their edu cation programmes at the ECS The Fraunhofer IFAM a German institute whose re search focuses on surface technologies as well as ad hesive technology has also been part of the European Coatings Show several times before Its focus at the show in 2015 will be a presenta tion of new developments of functional coatings such as anti ice self healing or anti fouling coatings as well as special adhesives e g prod ucts whose storage stability and curing process can be visiably monitored The insti tute will also present services for test engineering and the qualifactions of raw materi als and products and hopes to meet its customers says Yvonne Wilke who coordi nates the institute s partici pation in the fair Also present at the show will be the Paint Research Associa tion The association focuses on information and advice in the field of coatings xz Source KaYann Fotolia
