European Coatings Show Preview December 2014 www european coatings show com 20 Focus Joint displays National pavilions at the European Coatings Show From China to young German companies the European Coatings Show will again feature national pavilions A recurring highlight of the European Coatings Show is the Chinese pavilion which has been part of the trade show since 2003 This year the joint stand is being organ ised by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade CCPIT and accommo dates every Chinese exhibitor under 18 m It will be further divided into areas for raw ma terials manufacturers in halls 7 7A and 4A while a smaller number of lab equipment makers and mechanical engi neers will present their prod ucts in hall 6 NürnbergMesse expects around 100 exhibi tors to present their wares on a total floor space of 1000 m at the 2015 event Joint pavilions are often of great benefit to small en terprises Alexander Mat tausch project manager at NürnbergMesse says By being part of a joint stand smaller companies have a chance to participate in in ternational trade shows for a minimum of organisational outlay In the case of the Chinese pavilion the Chemi cal Subcouncil of the CCPIT sees to the technical equip ment the renting of the floor space stand assembly and other services Additionally joint stands help individual exhibitors to keep costs man ageable Government funds young companies In addition to the Chinese pavilion the European Coatings Show will feature a joint stand for young German companies For the second time the ECS is one of eight leading international trade fairs which the German Fed eral Ministry for Economic Af fairs and Energy has selected for a funding programme The Ministry will shoulder up to 70 of the costs incurred by young promising enterprises or a maximum of EUR 7 500 for expenses related to renting and assembling their stalls within a joint pavilion Any company based in Ger many can apply for funding if it is less than ten years old and satisfies the EU definition of a small to medium sized enterprise no more than 50 employees annual sales of less than EUR 10 million Bettina Wild sales manager at the NürnbergMesse says Trade shows are an ideal platform for young compa nies to present themselves to the market and to do es sential networking Without the funding many of them might not be able to take part in the fair The joint pavilions are a great opportunity for them to gain an impression of the trade fair world and to establish important contacts for the future And all of this is possible at a reasonable and manageable cost Funding aside the companies are of fered help with organisation before and during the ECS Visitors can find the joint pa vilion in hall 4 Applications can be submit ted up to eight weeks prior to the ECS Your contact at NürnbergMesse Bettina Wild Sales Manager Germany NürnbergMesse GmbH T 49 911 8606 8178 Fax 49 9 11 86 06 85 88 bettina wild nuernbergmesse de xz Eric with green coating solutions Biobased raw materials and sustain ability are just two keywords for this development Eric Brouwer Croda explains how he defines those keywords and which resources might be interesting in the future  How do you define the term biobased Eric Brouwer When talking about biobased a few things come to mind that are not just related to the natural and renewable origin of the ma terial The material can be of plant origin of course and when looking at raw materials we try to achieve a high content level of re newable carbon including as much biobased material as possible But when I think of biobased in rela tion to raw materials then the term is unmistakably linked to sustainability and overall lifetime as sessment Biobased ingre dients can for example extend a product s lifetime or functionality Widening the interpretation makes biobased the right way for ward in chemistry  Vegetable oils as a renewable source for sus tainable coatings a prom ising option Brouwer Our company history and know how are built on using vegetable oils in a variety of applica tions not only coatings but also adhesives and plas tics So for us sustainable coatings continue to be the promising option State of the art processing and prod uct development continue to open up new windows of opportunity and applications that meet and set standards in modern day life Innova tion and cooperation with universities and industrial partners in combination with increasing public awareness of the need for a sustainable society are helping to speed up this process  Which biobased raw materials will play an even larger role for coatings in the future than today Brouwer Besides those already mentioned the avail ability of more bio derived chemicals such as glycols will allow for a huge variety of building blocks In combi nation with materials derived from natural oil that would cover just about the whole spectrum of raw materials for resin production I also see a trend towards the use of carbohydrate derived materials for example agri cultural by products such as lignin which are currently not used in this way It is not only new raw materials but also processing methods that I predict will have a large role in the future I m thinking here of new cataly sis routes and fermentation for example xz
