European Coatings Show Preview December 2014 www european coatings show com 18 Indiana Convention Center Conference April 11 13 Show April 12 14 Indianapolis IN Save the Date nmna ac ad 183mmx277mm indd 1 02 12 2014 09 48 10 Focus UV technology offers economic benefits UV LED curing can further lower production costs but especially adapted chemicals are still necessary According to Oliver Starzmann IST Metz UV LED curing will become an important production technique in the future Nevertheless there is still a high demand for chemical research on suitable UV for mulations  Increasing efficiency constant product quality and lower storage costs these are the promises made for UV EB technology If this is true why doesn t everyone use this technology Oliver Starzmann Because it cures immediately UV technology offers a lot of economic benefits to the user such as high produc tion speeds low scrap rates and the option to recycle un used coating material when a UV mono cure system is used UV coated objects are highly resistant to chemicals and abrasion Furthermore UV coatings often have high solids contents or are absolutely solvent free UV technology is often used in industrial environments where high production vol umes have to be coated It is the preferred technology whenever inline processing and short production times are demanded Neverthe less every application has to be analysed carefully in terms of specific process requirements and technical and commercial aspects  UV LED curing a prom ising curing technique for the future Which aspect still requires research in order to achieve widespread use in the coatings industry Starzmann UV LEDs are al ready widely used for curing purposes in many industries We believe that UV LEDs will become an important light source in the future UV LED systems are continually be ing enhanced We expect to see improvements in the UV LED chips themselves in terms of greater optical power output and efficiency Furthermore a wavelength shift to shorter wavelengths could help to increase ap Oliver Starzmann IST Metz plication opportunities so far UV LED chips in the UVA UVV range with a wavelength from 365 to 415 nm are wide spread on the market It is important to mention that UV LED curing processes also need specially adapted coatings which have to be optimised to the given narrow band wavelengths of the UV LED module Here we have recently seen plenty of activity in the chemical industry aimed at develop ing new coatings and new raw materials and these will help to enlarge the number of applications    How is the lower radia tion energy of LED limiting their suitability for the coat ings industry and what can be done to overcome these limitations Starzmann From our point of view chemical UV formula tions have to be adapted to existing UV LED power levels and should resolve prob lems such as yellowing and oxygen inhibition Current production speeds are ac ceptable and depend mainly on the application We ex pect a positive price power scenario which should serve to make the technology more attractive in the future too xz UV LED will become an important light source in the future Source FikMik Fotolia
