European Coatings Show Preview December 2014 www european coatings show com 16 Focus Jean Marie Schmuck Omnova Solutions More than just decoration and protection Functional coatings are seen as a means of differentiation Self cleaning paints noise insulating systems and coat ings that improve indoor air quality by absorbing volatile pollutants are just some examples of novel func tional coatings Jean Marie Schmuck Product Manager for Coatings at Omnova Solutions knows all about the current trends  How do you define functional coatings what should they be capable of Jean Marie Schmuck Our definition of a functional coating is one that provides some kind of functional ity over and above that of decorating and protecting the substrate to which it is applied i e one that also provides a practical use or benefit Functional coatings should challenge the current technical limits or overcome some limitations of current technologies Examples are a waterborne coating that could be applied at near freezing temperatures or could over come some other defect that has not been properly controlled until now or even comply with potential new en vironmental regulations that might impose constraints on the leaching of hazardous in gredients from the paint film into the environment  What are the latest trends in raw materials for functional coatings Schmuck Paint manufactur ers most often working closely with raw materials suppliers have clearly un derstood the benefits of func tional coatings and see them as a means of differentiation Some examples of the latest trends in architectural coat ings are self cleaning paints noise insulating paints and coatings that improve indoor air quality by absorbing vola tile pollutants In totally differ ent area we launched an am photeric binder a short while ago that is easy to formulate and is ideal for stain blocking applications because it con tains cationic groups bonded to an anionic polymer back bone that inhibit dissolution and subsequent migration of water soluble domestic stains through the paint film Such innovations could be come compelling marketing arguments and are therefore a vector of communication for both consumers and retailers  What solutions for func tional coatings are you cur rently working on Schmuck We are currently working on new platforms for designing specialty resins that include new generation raw materials some of which come from entirely different industries For example we have developed a dispersion that has very high water and corrosion resistance It is in tended for high gloss direct to metal enamels that offer superior performance on fer rous and non ferrous metals without the use of anticorro sive pigment In spring 2014 we also unveiled a resin which is based on our low exuda tion binder technology and is differentiated by its unri valled resistance to surfactant leaching snail trails and efflorescence Finally we are actively developing new latex for waterborne intumescent coatings one of our tradition al areas of expertise Applied to structural steel these sys tems are to my mind a great example of how functional coatings can protect people and property against fire xz André Garber Head of R D Paper Based Packaging at Actega Terra is fascinated by nanoparticles Even though he himself doesn t like limit ing the topic of coating func tionality to nanomaterials he is amazed by the number of different nanomaterials that are used in this area  Nanotechnology is no longer a new field for coat ings What fascinates you most about these particles André Garber Nanoparticles have also been used in the paint industry for several years Well known examples there are scratch resistant and super hydrophobic auto motive clearcoats Nanotechnology is one of the most exciting and fascinat ing areas in science Despite the very small particle size nanomaterial has an im mense impact on a coating s properties The particles André Garber Actega Terra Immense impact on the properties of a coating Less environmental pollution and noise using nanomaterials may be very small but the scope for tailoring their structures to achieve specific material properties confers an enormous advantage Us ing nanoparticles in coatings extends the property set by an additional property This boosts the added value generated by coatings and paves the way for advanced applications  Commercial aspects aside research is being di rected at new functionality And wherever functionalisa tion is mentioned nanoma terials are included Which trends are you seeing here Garber Yes indeed the primary goal of many re search projects is to extend functionality These projects are essentially focused on identifying new possibilities and do not have a commercial background For this reason some of the nanoparticles already available are still too expensive for commercial use especially for the price driven coatings market This situa tion will change over time and as more and more nanomateri als become available I expect that it only then will be possi ble to quantify the advantages of functionalized coatings For me functionalization is not limited to the field of na notechnology but because of all the fanfare surrounding the new material that is where the spotlight is being directed And there are still some eco logical effects that have yet to be clarified Nevertheless I see huge development poten tial ahead for nanomaterials An emerging trend will be the reduction in anthropo genic environmental pollution through the use of nanomate rials A major goal here is the removal of airborne nitrogen oxides generated by increas ing volumes of car traffic The photocatalytic properties of titanium oxide make it capable of neutralizing nitrogen ox ides In the future crash barri ers and sound proofing walls will be coated with nanoscale titanium dioxide Another important area is the develop ment of anti bacterial coatings that provide long term protec tion Hospital and health care facilities have a high demand for anti bacterial coatings to reduce the potential risk of infection by indirect contact Some initial success has been achieved with the develop ment of nanosilver but the antibacterial properties need several hours to take effect For more effective impact new anti bacterial substanc es need to be developed xz
