management I tell them FM Global is a model for how insurance companies should conduct business They are focused driven and they understand their clients Do you view FM Global as an extension of your function at Penn State I view my team at FM Global as valued partners They really bring something to the table I would also say that the engineers FM Global brought in an expert who was a researcher himself He was able to work together with our researcher Every time we tried to figure out what it would cost to replicate the research the number changed and it varied widely Ultimately with the help of FM Global we all came away content with the reimbursement and we were able to move forward We were very satisfied FM Global did a great job it done We just can t make it safe enough sometimes But by and large our job is to work with faculty staff and students to find a way to share their vision and help them accomplish their goals What are some of Penn State s unique risks Well we start out with a football stadium that we fill seven Saturdays a year with 107 000 fans That s a challenge We squeeze all those people into the building within an hour They have a good experience win or lose and then they leave safely There s a tremendous amount of work that goes into that Hundreds of people are there to make it happen Penn State is really good at being really big We do a lot of things in a lot of places But to paraphrase the words of Don ald Rumsfeld There are things that I know there are things that I know I don t know But there are also things that I don t know that I don t know That s what worries me the most What do you worry most about I worry that somebody is going to do some thing inadvertently that has compliance or financial consequences or that someone is going to get hurt Everybody wants to do the right thing People at PSU especially these days are very willing to seek guidance and ask How can I do the right thing Can you speak about a claims experience you ve had recently We had a faculty member in biomedical research who had accumulated tissue sam ples from a particular kind of ovarian cancer She had been accumulating these samples for more than 20 years Some of the samples were from patients who were cured some were from patients who had passed away She kept these samples in a freezer and one day the power went out causing her to lose some of the samples The big challenge for us was determining how much we lost and determining its monetary value It s not raw stock or inventory or materials in process This was human tissue that was not replicable At the end with the help of FM Global we all came away content with the reimbursement and we were able to move forward The adjust ers that we work with on all of our claims have been very good They help us to get to where we need to be with the claims process adjusting the claim In fact the adjusters that we work with on all of our claims have been very good They know Penn State they know our staff and they help us to get to where we need to be with the claims and adjustment process Have you had any issues with resolving claims When we have issues with claims it s because we have trouble documenting the claim on our end There have been a couple of issues where our claims adjusters have begged us to come up with final documentation so we can finish out the claims settlement We are sometimes our own worst enemy because we don t have armies of accountants to keep track of things But I would have to say that FM Global s claims people are treated like members of our own staff Do you feel the company is easy to do busi ness with It does not require prompting for me to say as much If I talk with my peers in higher education or someone who is new to risk who come here are absolutely an extension of the university and we treat them as such Whenever they show up they are welcomed They are well recognized for their expertise in field engineering We submit drawings in advance so in case something happens we have a jump on things Honestly we re addicted to their engineering and we re not shy about saying so 28 Reason ISSUE 1 2015 VOICES
