Can you discuss your background and how it led to risk management Out of college I started out as a claims adjuster for Liberty Mutual I moved away from that to work for a natural gas utility which began my experience in risk man agement That was my first interaction with FM Global I stayed at the gas company for a couple of years before moving on to for est products to work for Hammermill then Simpson Timber and finally to International Paper for 10 years Eventually I moved to Pennsylvania in 2003 where I found a job at Penn State University PSU In your estimation how has the field of risk management evolved since you started It has grown tremendously both in profes sionalism and depth When I started in the 1980s it was predominately insurance with only a little mitigation involved Now with the implementation of what is called enter prise risk management it s well beyond that I m proud to be called upon to do things that don t have anything to do with insurance and to help the university deal with issues that are strategic financial and operational compliance risks There has been a broadening definition of risk management in that time Nature abhors a vacuum You have to be willing to step into that void to deal with these opportunities at the right place and the right time People will give you those oppor tunities if you show you have promise if you show that you re forward looking and prove that you know more than just the insurance side What is your reputation among your peers at PSU I would hope that folks would say that I have the ability to get to yes We work with fac ulty members and staff to make things hap pen I like to think that we ve moved from the department of No to the department of Know We try to help people there may be limitations but we try hard to make things happen Most of the people I know who are successful are so because they can find a way to get things done How would you explain your risk manage ment philosophy My risk management philosophy is As long as it s legal let s try to find a way to get ince 2003 Gary Langsdale has served as university risk officer at Pennsylvania State University He is also the presi dent of the university s captive subsidiary Nittany Insurance Com pany Langsdale has 40 years of experience in the insurance and risk management field has been a grad undergrad guest lecturer on enterprise risk management and has written articles for trade publications such as Financial Executive Risk Management and Treasury Management In 2009 Business Insurance recognized Langsdale as a member of its Risk Management Honor Roll S VOICES ISSUE 1 2015 Reason 27
