When you first came on as president of Leviton China what was your mission Clearly at the time we were not at the level we wanted to be from a manufactur ing standpoint in this part of the world One of the key things was how to improve the operation on all levels Many things had to be done not only from an operational stand point but in a customer service way as well So there were quite a lot of steps we had to take right off the bat What strengths did you have coming into this position Why were you the person to do this job In my prior life I ran global facilities from Mexico to Brazil to Hungary to Russia so I ve dealt with multicultural perspectives of operations and people s behaviors And I guess I also clicked with my bosses and they have been very supportive by allowing me a free hand in changing and transform ing this outfit What is your philosophy about safety The first objective we had was safety Why do we say safety comes first Safety involves people It involves people s lives That s why we put a lot of emphasis on that Then our people start to feel the dedication to safety in their hearts Because of that we see the safety records getting better and better Over the last few years we ve seen a huge improvement not just in terms of knowledge about safety but in terms of people understanding and embracing it That is very satisfying n his five years as president of Leviton China Swee Leong Lim has overseen his share of significant accomplishments As a leader of a workforce of 5 000 he has provided comparatively roomy living conditions a higher quality of food and above all a safe work environment In doing so he has increased worker retention a nor mally intractable issue in China s factory culture He runs a demo cratic non authoritarian business and abides by an open door policy I don t care who it is he says Anyone who has something to dis cuss with me knows they can speak with me at any time Swee and his engineering counterparts also undertook a multi million dollar sprinkler retrofit project unusual for Asia which needed to be installed without taking the plant offline With good planning and plant cooperation the installation hydrostatic testing and execu tion went off without a hitch and the project led by Leviton Director of Risk Management Lee Raynor along with Swee was deemed an overwhelming success Today Leviton s China facilities in Dongguan and Nanjing are rated highly protected risks or HPR I 24 Reason ISSUE 1 2015 VOICES DOWNLOAD RiskEssentials to watch the Voices video with Swee Leong Lim
