well educated potential workforce a stable political environment and a strong supply chain infrastructure Peter Lord has been with Hershey for nearly four decades His primary responsi bilities are to provide design installation and startup for all the equipment that makes and packages the company s products In the early stages of a project we consult with FM Global to be sure we re following all the current codes and regulations They provide recommendations and then we basically agree on a design and then follow through with it LOGISTICS Of course Steve Myers admits this project is different Constructing a facility that s 700 000 square feet 65 000 square meters one of the largest facilities in our network and 17 hours away by air that s huge On the front end of the Malaysia project Myers was involved with the land search and the discovery process with a local engineering firm that helped Hershey design and build the facility Myers was also involved in leading the civil structural and architectural design from the Hershey side until we got about 90 percent complete with the documentation then we had people who were going to be on the ground there to take it the last 10 percent As our partner FM Global asks us the right questions and we respond to each other in a way that at the end of the day we have a facility that is highly protected STEVE MYERS Senior Manager Facilities Energy and Utilities Systems The Hershey Company Skip Slauson FM Global s account engineer for Hershey helmed the engineering on the insurance side The client service team was aware of this project well ahead of any plans hitting the drawing board Slauson has been on the Hershey account for 20 years We were asked for input on areas that would be either negatively affected or tough to design around from a natural hazard perspective Then as we progressed into the design phase we were able to bring in local expertise both from Hershey and in Malaysia so that we could work together to find the site discover what its needs would be and lay out the specifications for an adequately protected facility We ve been involved since day one and we ll be there right on through to final completion Since 2001 Myers a civil engineer himself has been the corporate interface with FM Global He has worked very closely with the FM Global team specifically Skip Slauson account engineer It s always been a practice of mine as a construction manager on large projects to bring FM Global in almost as soon as I know about the project says Myers Once you start down the path of beginning to design and build and you re making decisions on your own without their input you can get into trouble quickly I make it part of my daily routine on a new project to bring Skip and his team in and they get an idea of what we re thinking Myers points to some specific challenges We want to make sure we re selecting the right materials given the wind and rain conditions that we ll be faced with in Malaysia In Doing this work in a place so far from Hershey Pennsylvania makes it challenging Our expertise he says is candy making not necessarily codes and regulations So we rely on FM Global s advice and consulta tion to be sure that we design the equipment properly and safely Also Lord continues Our supplier base is somewhat unknown so it s a bit of a mine field we have to work through to develop appropriate contacts find contrac tors and understand how business is done in Malaysia We ve had numerous meetings in Malaysia with FM Global s people on the ground there We ve brought in some of their U S technical experts to review our designs so it gives us confidence that we have an extra set of eyes watching over this huge project 42 Reason ISSUE 2 2014
