STRATEGIC LOCATION The company announced recently that it planned to expand its manufacturing capa bilities to Asia its first green field project in the region The move is intended to aggres sively increase The Hershey Company s global growth and revenue Construction of this new facility is now underway in Johor Malaysia Steve Myers senior manager of corpo rate facilities utilities and energy conserva tion for The Hershey Company has helped to manage many of the company s green field construction projects the Malaysia facility is the first such construction project in Asia The project is huge for the com pany he says We re on a very aggressive economic growth pattern here There s pres sure on all of us as a group We want to do the right thing and I believe we have the right process in place to do that The Malaysia plant investment contin ues Hershey s ongoing expansion of its global supply chain to position the company for its next 100 years of growth This follows on the heels of a US 300 million investment in manufacturing and logistics which culminated with the opening of one of the world s most technologically advanced chocolate making facility in the company s hometown of Hershey Pennsylvania USA After Hershey completes the building structure in 2015 the Malaysia plant will be one of the largest facilities in the company s global manufacturing network with 700 000 total square feet 65 000 square meters The company has nine plants in the United States as well as facilities in Canada Mexico India Brazil and China The Malaysia plant will also have the capability to produce the broadest array of finished products of any Hershey factory outside of the United States and Mexico The plant will produce four of Hershey s five global brands which include Hershey s Kisses Ice Breakers Reese s and Hershey s Milk Chocolate brands Hershey is expanding its global distribution of these brands as part of the company s ambitious global growth vision to achieve US 10 billion in annual revenue by 2017 Hershey s global growth plans include focusing on key international markets such as China and expanding its consumer product portfolios around the world Hershey has been investing in its Asia business for several years building its presence across the region The Johor plant a US 250 million investment represents the single largest investment in Asia during the company s 18 year history in the region STATE OF THE ART TECHNOLOGY The new plant will include innovations in automated candy making technology including proprietary equipment and systems developed to Hershey s specifications The new Malaysia plant features the latest confectionery manufacturing technology and will complement pro duction at an existing joint venture plant in China The plant s capabilities will include high We just celebrated our 25th anniversary and I will say that no two days have been the same in interacting with FM Global which is exactly what we re looking for in terms of a strategic partner They challenge us and they challenge the status quo That keeps our risk management program growing and evolving MEGAN MARSHALL Director of Risk Management The Hershey Company 40 Reason ISSUE 2 2014
