Talking Points with Kirsten Shawn Risk Manager Brandywine Realty Trust one of the largest full service integrated real estate companies in the United States are hearing about some mass shooting or what starts as rain ends up a superstorm or hurricane with severe flooding and power loss We re trying to stay ahead of those kinds of things so when property managers are faced with these situations they know how to respond How do you communicate your philosophy in risk management through your properties I m a little outspoken and very high energy I m extremely direct and I do a lot of hands on training The more I can communicate to my team the more they can commu nicate to their team Communica tion is key for me If I can get in their heads they will remember what I said and better communicate with our tenants It s really important to make sure everybody is on the same page because you never know when you re going to have a true emergency situation So far we ve been lucky and haven t been hit with anything too hor rific But with the changing weather and all of these terrible construction incidents you have to think it was just poor communication For me the more I can tell my col leagues or bring in the FM Global team to explain why we do things a certain way or why these types of materials are better to use it just makes everything more seam less It makes us better prepared Do you have a team that helps you in your risk management role at Brandywine Internally my manager George Johnstone executive vice president EVP of operations What is your corporate background Kirsten I started my career with Brandywine in 2001 I spent about nine years in the legal group and I did a lot of transactional work acquisitions disposition contract negotiations and handled the claims and liti gation In 2006 Brandywine acquired Prentiss Proper ties Trust and at that time there was a gentleman at Prentiss named Greg Imhoff who took me under his wing and groomed me to transition into risk management It was 2010 when I moved into risk management full time and I ve been the company s risk man ager ever since Let s discuss how you put your imprint on Brandywine risk management Once I made my formal move into risk management working in operations I was able to start some new safety pro grams within the company The one I m most proud of is our Boot Camp Boot Camp focuses on our internal safety and engineering pol icies and procedures Then I take it a step further and think about how we can further assist our ten ants and how we can better educate their employees in emergency situations In real estate it s not just our employees and our properties we re dealing with We have all of our tenants and their employees as well Boot Camp aids in training our property managers and engineering staff to understand the way Brandywine views risk not only from an operational level but from a safety perspective as well Talk about some of the things you focus on in this training A couple of the trends we ve been focusing on recently have been active shooter and severe weather train ing This is a day and age where every other week we 10 Reason ISSUE 2 2014 theLATEST
