Messe Stuttgart Sustainability Report Position at July 2017 9 During the construction of the new trade fair centre which made Messe Stuttgart the most modern trade fair venue in Europe ecological factors were included as an integral part of the building architecture and fi ttings Partially glazed façades and continuous skylights ensure central light incidence so that every hall and conference room can be used for the most part with daylight If lighting is necessary it can be individually controlled for different hall areas This creates a natu ral room atmosphere for exhibitors and visitors and also reduces energy consumption Around 4 5 million kWh of solar electricity are gen erated annually on the roofs of the exhibition and con gress halls and the Bosch multi storey car park This could supply approximately 1 070 four person households with electricity for a year Compared with the average national electricity mix around 3 100 tonnes of CO2 are saved every year With a combined area of 34 000 square metres the photovoltaic system is one of the world s largest roof mounted systems When the new Paul Horn Hall is completed the area of the photovoltaic system will be increased again by 8 000 square metres with an additional annual output of up to 750 000 kWh This extra electricity will contribute towards the objective of a basic autonomous supply for Messe Stuttgart For its remaining requirements Messe Stuttgart purchases 100 CO2 neutral green electricity from hydroelectric power A prestressed arch structure made of wood was used for the fi rst time instead of steel for the roof of the new Paul Horn Hall By using a naturally renewable construction material which did not have to be pro duced using a great deal of energy the sustainability concept was also emphasised once again during construction One future oriented step for the industry would be to roughly calculate the CO2 footprint This sustainability indicator measures the total amount of resulting CO2 emissions This calculation can only be made vaguely at the start due to its complexity for example with the travel and accommodation of visitors and exhibitors However examination of the causes of emissions encourages awareness of the environmental pollution thus created and is essential in preparing the ground for our development towards becoming the most sustainable trade fair venue in Europe Energy and emissions We produce electricity and we save energy 100 CO2 neutral green electrici ty from hydroelectric power 3 100 Annual savings of tonnes of CO2 Objectives Autonomous generation of the base load Calculation of the CO2 footprint Measures Identifi cation of the CO2 determinants 4 5 million kWh of solar electricity
