Waste and waste disposal Reuse protects the environment and the economic cycle 16 The topics of waste and waste disposal are very import ant for the trade fair industry since the waste produced at events and during the stand construction and dis mantling process accounts for a substantial proportion of environmental pollution in the trade fair industry Messe Stuttgart therefore wants to continuously im prove the way in which it handles waste separation and avoidance Waste disposal at Messe Stuttgart is the responsibility of ALBA Stuttgart GmbH hereinafter called ALBA for short which is certifi ed according to DIN ISO 9001 and has its own recycling yard at the trade fair centre A disposal system based on the user pays principle has been implemented for exhibitors The costs here depend on the level of separation and weight of the ty pes of waste also called fractions Employees of ALBA are present in the exhibition halls during every event in order to provide exhibitors with advice on optimum separation and disposal of the waste they produce The motto for cleanly separated waste is as follows We call it raw material Exhibitors can report their pro visional waste volumes and frac tions in advance by means of an online order system However this option is still not used to any great extent One important objective is therefore to create incentive systems and make exhibitors aware of waste and waste disposal before events take place Approximately 3 000 to 3 500 tonnes of waste are produced every year at the trade fair centre This corresponds to the waste produced by around 2 400 four person households The around 40 per cent of residual waste are burnt ener getically recycled to generate energy and electricity while the remaining fractions are recycled materially recycled This recycling rate is therefore about 60 per cent Nearly all waste is also used By recycling the above mentioned materials 3 612 tonnes of resources and 636 tonnes of greenhouse gases were saved in 2015 Special mention must be made of the recycling of exhi bition carpets which are mostly only used by exhibitors for one event For this purpose ALBA cooperates with a partner who relays these carpets or turns them into doormats Waste island on the trade fair grounds 60 recycling rate
