12 Messe Stuttgart has two contractual partners both of whom are domiciled in the Stuttgart region for stand construction Regional contractual partners comple ment the sustainability concept of Messe Stuttgart because this combines short transport distances and thus low emissions Geographical proximity also means shorter reaction times greater flexibility and therefore efficiency Generally speaking Messe Stuttgart ensures that contractual partners are domiciled in the surrounding region or at least have a branch in the region Re gionality is therefore firmly anchored as an evaluation criterion in selecting contractual partners During the construction of exhibition stands Messe Stuttgart always endeavours to include as many individual customer requests as possible in system construction solutions Compared with individual stands the modular design of system stands guaran tees increased reusability and thus a longer service life of the materials System stands account for a large part of stand construction turnover at Messe Stuttgart In order to make exhibition stand construction even more sustainable in future Messe Stuttgart is examin ing various ways in which to reduce the CO2 footprint of the constructed exhibition stands e g through compensation projects In order to continuously sensitise exhibitors and their exhibition stand service providers to sustainability questions a guidebook on this subject will be pro duced in future In 2015 Messe Stuttgart was the first trade fair company to take a forward looking step for the industry when it introduced the eco supplement amounting to 4 00 per square metre The objective of this eco supplement is to make exhibitors aware of sustainability According to Ulrich Kromer von Baerle President of Messe Stuttgart it is a solidarity pact for sustainability with exhibitors that symbolises the joint responsibility toward society The resulting funds are used to finance current and future sustainability meas ures so that Messe Stuttgart s commitment towards sustainability can be developed even further Exhibitors are not just included symbolically but also directly and actively in the sustainability process So called service calls are made to customers prior to our own events During these calls reference is made for example to aspects and guidelines which must be observed during preliminary planning This increases planning security optimises processes and therefore reduces energy consumption and emissions Another measure was the introduction of the exhibi tion bag Messe Stuttgart is the first German trade fair company to advocate public exhibitions free of plastic bags and wants to become the first trade fair company without any plastic bags in the long term The CO2 neutral produced exhibition bag made of special recycled unbleached and compostable paper was therefore introduced in conjunction with Apomore GmbH a company located in the Stuttgart district At Messe Stuttgart s autumn line up in 2016 exhibitors were actively requested to dispense with their plas tic bags and use the exhibition bag instead This is the reason why every one of the 1 800 exhibitors Exhibitors and stand construction Accepting joint responsibility from an exhibition stand to a bag Measures Definition of and agreement on possible sustainability criteria with the corresponding technical departments Development of a sustainability guideline for exhibitors and or their commissioned stand Objectives Reduce the CO2 footprint for exhibition stands Offer CO2 neutral exhibition stands Create even greater awareness of sustainability among exhibitors
